In one open-plan office, occupants identifying as women made 67% fewer thermostat adjustments than occupants identifying as men.
Not because women have broader thermal comfort ranges. Because they're less likely to adjust shared-space thermostats without explicit permission.
The AI system learned this gendered interaction pattern and optimised accordingly.
Result: thermal allocation better matched men's preferences.
Neutral algorithm. Gendered outcome. That's indirect discrimination.
