Scheme Modifications and AI

LinkedIn Post 13: Scheme Modifications and AI
Your AI system just recommended changing your inspection scheme. Maybe it says:
"Increase inspection intervals by 6 months"
"Add a new sensor-based assessment before inspection"
"Change inspection methodology based on vessel age"
The algorithm is making a solid case. The data supports it.
Now what?
If you implement the modification without governance, you're essentially letting the algorithm override your written scheme of examination without a formal review process.
If you do have governance (APMGA-MODIFY), you:
1. Capture the recommendation in a formal modification request
2. Have qualified people review the technical basis
3. Ensure the modification doesn't compromise safety
4. Document the decision and reasoning
5. Update the written scheme if the modification is approved
This might sound like bureaucracy. It's actually accountability.
PSSR requires that your written scheme be sound and defensible. When an AI system proposes changing that scheme, the change should undergo the same rigor as the original scheme development.
Organizations that have formal modification procedures operate with lower risk. If regulators question the scheme, you have documented evidence that changes were carefully reviewed.
Does your organization have a formal process for AI-recommended scheme modifications?
