Theme: Equity & Bias
Here's something uncomfortable:
In the organisations we studied, occupants over 55 had their preferred temperature set to spec only 47% of the time. Occupants 35–54: 71%.
Not because the algorithm discriminates by age. Because older occupants adjust thermostats less frequently, so the system learns their preferences less accurately.
Neutral algorithm. Inequitable outcome.
This is indirect discrimination. And it's happening in smart buildings across the UK right now.
