LinkedIn Post 5: Written Schemes in the Age of AI
Your written scheme of examination is a legal document under PSSR. It defines:
Inspection frequency
Inspection methodology
Who is responsible
What conditions trigger additional inspections
But does it mention your AI predictive maintenance system?
If your answer is "no," you have a documentation gap.
When an AI system influences inspection decisions—even if only as a recommendation—the written scheme should formally acknowledge and govern that role. This is not bureaucracy. It's accountability.
A proper APMGA-SCHEME integration includes:
✓ Documentation of the AI system (name, version, data inputs)
✓ Decision rules (when is the AI consultation required?)
✓ Competent person authority (who approves/rejects recommendations?)
✓ Audit trail (every decision is logged)
✓ Version control (when the algorithm changes, the scheme is updated)
This creates a formal, auditable record. If regulators inspect you, you can show exactly how AI fits into your inspection governance. If a vessel fails, you have documented evidence of how decisions were made.
Organizations with properly integrated written schemes operate with lower regulatory risk and lower liability exposure.
Is your written scheme formally documenting your AI system?
