The AI Model You Can't Own

LinkedIn Post 03: The AI Model You Can't Own

Your building's AI model spent 3 years learning your specific operational patterns.

Occupancy rhythms. Seasonal load curves. Equipment behavior. Weather correlations. Maintenance cycles.

36 months of accumulated learning. Millions of calculations refining optimization logic.

Your contract with the vendor ends. You want to switch to a competitor vendor.

The incumbent vendor: "The model is our proprietary intellectual property. You can't have it."

You lose everything.

The new vendor's model starts from scratch. For 6-12 months, your building underperforms while they relearn patterns the old vendor had already mastered.

Cost to you: $36,000+ in foregone energy savings.

This is data portability failure, and it's a perfect lock-in tool.

Solution: Require vendors to export trained model weights in standard formats (ONNX, SavedModel) at contract end.

You provided the building data that trained the model. You own the learned intelligence.

Insist on it in your next contract negotiation.
