Here's a question the food supply chain isn't asking yet.
The world's largest cold storage operators now use AI algorithms to optimize energy consumption across hundreds of facilities. Refrigeration accounts for 70% of their energy bills. The incentive to optimize is enormous.
But in cold storage, every autonomous energy decision is a food safety decision.
When an algorithm adjusts a freezer setpoint by 2°F during a demand response event to save electricity — who authorized that tradeoff? What's the audit trail? And does the FDA's FSMA traceability rule require proving the algorithm maintained safe temperatures?
I've been tracking autonomous building AI vendors for over a year. The commercial building sector has the same problem — 5 out of 8 vendors have zero governance framework. But cold storage raises the stakes dramatically. A 2°F deviation in an office building means someone's uncomfortable. A 2°F deviation in a frozen food warehouse can mean spoilage across 100,000 pallets and recalls affecting millions of consumers.
The cold storage industry is investing billions in automation right now — AI-driven temperature management, automated warehouses, energy optimization algorithms. The technology is impressive. The governance is nonexistent.
Nobody has built a framework that defines what these algorithms can decide about temperature, under what authority, with what audit trail, and with what food safety boundaries.
That's what we're building.
